Titanic hits the iceberg 🏔️ !!
As part of our ‘Unsinkable’ topic, P7 explored icebergs today!
We used a frozen balloon to investigate how icebergs float in the ocean! We discovered that most of an iceberg is hidden underwater meaning that only about 10% of the iceberg can be visible above the water!
We explored how the iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean would have caused damage to the Titanic as the mighty ship tried to steer around the mass of ice!
Using Archimedes bath story - we were even able to calculate the volume of our homemade ‘iceberg’! We continued to measure the circumference of the ‘iceberg’ throughout the afternoon and observed any other changes we could see as the ice began to melt.
Finally we placed 4 different ‘temperature baths’ around the room (containing iced water, tap water, tepid water and hot water)!
Throughout the afternoon we used a thermometer to investigate how the temperatures of these ‘water baths’ changed over time, affecting the rate of melting ice.
