Termly Planners

19th Oct 2022

The NI Curriculum aims to empower young people to develop their potential and to make informed and responsible choices and decisions throughout their lives.

Our aim in St. John the Baptist Primary School is to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all children and to give every pupil the opportunity to experience success in learning and to achieve as high a standard as possible.

This is delivered through the following 7 areas of learning:

Language and literacy, Mathematics and Numeracy, The Arts, The World Around Us, PDMU, PE and RE.

At the heart of the curriculum lies an explicit emphasis on the development of skills and capabilities for lifelong learning. (Plan, Do, Review) These thinking skills include:

  • Thinking, problem solving and decision making
  • Self-Management
  • Working with others
  • Managing Information
  • Being Creative

Our Termly Planners include topics within the areas of learning which will be covered.

Linguistic Phonics:

  • One sound picture a week will be accompanied by either High Frequency Words for our younger children or Commonly Misspelt Words for Key Stage 2 children.
  • Daily practice is vital for the learning of spellings.
  • A weekly check-up for spellings will be administered on a Friday with corrections written 3 times at the back of the book and learned. We encourage parents to sign these books before returning them on a Monday.

Reading:

  • Children will receive 1/2 reading books per week depending on the level and age of the child. In Key Stage 2, children will receive a novel per half term.
  • Reading should be encouraged every night with a focus on reading for meaning.
  • Accelerated Reading is for children from Primary 4-7/Rang 4-7 with a focus on reading for pleasure.

Numeracy:

  • New mathematical concepts will be introduced with a weekly mental focus which will then be assessed through a weekly number check on a Friday
  • Mathletics is a mathematical programme to assist with the reinforcement of concepts covered in class. Tasks may be set by the class teacher or children will be directed to focus in on certain areas for additional practice.

Home Learning:

  • Home learning is generally posted on a Friday and will consist of:

Monday – Literacy

Tuesday – Numeracy

Wednesday – WAU/ICT/RE

Thursday – Learning night

Reading (whether it is a guided reading book/novel or Accelerated Reading book) and Mathletics (timed or set tasks) are to be completed every night.

  • Whilst Google Classroom has been our main platform for Home Learning tasks, this is currently under review and we will keep you updated regarding subsequent changes to this policy.
  • Please note, if any parent has a query, please contact the office to arrange an appointment to speak to the class teacher. Google Classroom should not be used as a form of communication.
  • Termly Planners for all year groups can be located on our website in the ‘Our School’ section under ‘Curriculum Learning’. These will be updated at the beginning of each new term.
