STEM Investigation- How did the Vikings keep warm?

21st Feb 2020

As part of our Vikings topic, we have been investigating Viking clothing and discussing how the Vikings would have kept warm in such a cold climate.

The countries from which the Vikings came had a climate which is colder than ours. They did not have electricity or central heating, relying only on open fires and their clothing to keep them warm.

Today we used small bottles to represent people. We covered each of the bottles with a different fabric (satin silk, cotton, wool, leather viscose). We then filled each bottle with warm water, observing and recording the temperatures of each bottle at 5 minute intervals.

We were able to conclude that wool was able to keep the water bottle hottest for longest, whilst viscose was the least effective at keeping the water in the bottle hot.
