P7 Victorian Times Inventions and Science Activities
P7 classes researched Victorian inventions and discoveries and then experimented with light and sound to recreate some of the key discoveries.
Thomas Edison discovered the light bulb in 1876. Pupils tried reading by candlelight, then with the light from a bulb to realise the difference such a discovery would have made in everyday life.
They made their own circuits to light a bulb and then learned that the first telegraph was essentially a giant circuit. They then used torches to experiment with Morse Code signalling.
The children discovered how sound travels in waves, using tuning forks to observe and feel vibrations. The pupils watched clips about the life of Alexander Graham Bell to learn how he came to invent the first telephone. Children then made and experimented with their own simple string telephones.
