National Limerick Day - TUESDAY 12th MAY

12th May 2020

TUESDAY 12th MAY is National Limerick Day.
Did you look at the picture and read the one about the old man with a beard? Thank goodness Mr Guy has trimmed his!

Limericks are a special type of poem which are often very silly. They were made famous by a poet called Edward Lear. They have 5 lines with a special pattern:
Line 1, 2 and 5 have eight syllables each (occasionally 9) and rhyme with each other.
Lines 3 and 4 have five syllables (occasionally 6) and rhyme with each other.

Look at this example and try to finish it:

There once was a young boy named Joe

Who dropped a big brick on his _____.

He asked, with a frown,

"Will the swelling go ______?"

And the doctor said, "Yes, I think ____."

A limerick tells a little story:
Line 1 – introduces character
Line 2 – detail about character
Lines 3 & 4 – what happens
Line 5 – conclusion

You can read more about how to write them here:

Have fun trying to make up your own. Send in a video of any that you make to amuse us.
(Warning – I’m pretty sure Mrs McDonald knows a few rude limericks!! Don’t listen to her!)
